WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2010
The 14th world championship Pencak Silat, kejuruaan dunia, have been succesfully organised by host country Indonesia. Nearly 32 national teams, representing 400 athletes, gave their best performance in the superb organised championships at Indonesia´s national training centre Padepokan Taman Minih. Team Bongkot Harimau from Groningen won 2 bronze and 1 silver.
Six members of Pencak Silat school Bongkot Harimau were selected for the Dutch national team, together with three pesilats from Bongkot Friesland: silver/medallist Patrick Pronk, Dennis Scholten and Jan Van Houten.
Class I competitor Eddy Clements booked great succes in de preliminary rounds by defeating sequentially Australia and New Zealand by 5:0. In the semis Eddy lost from Malaysia. Security.nl teammates Remi Grooten, class H, and J class fighter Roy Schut occured the same. Schut was mastering the game in the first two rounds, but was severly punished for a few dodging tactics in the last round. Grooten bravely strived to overcome Malaysia´s 2009 Sea Games champion Faizal Abdullah, but came up short in experience. Dutch G class pesilat Martijn Houwerzijl passed India in round one due to overweight and disqualification of his opponent on the scales. In the next round an exciting match followed against Singapore in which both pesilats mutually scored points. Unluckily Houwerzijl came up short one point in the end, after leading the game.
More bronze and silver
5th Groningen exponent, Emil Nuninga, booked a great win over Singapore in his first World Championship participation. He managed to regain double points in round two and three. A stunning action. In the semis against Malaysia Emil managed to maintain his act, losing by a few points only. A promising performance, awarded with a bronze medal. Team Bongkot´s last trump card, Harriet Zuidland, proved her reputation as a world class fighter by defeating Malaysia in the semifinals. Great expectations were made for the finals against Vietnam, a close fight, unfortunately lost.
Hollands' hunger
Netherlands showed their best will and skill in a weeklong mondial meeting with highly preprared teams from Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and other Southeast asians countries. Even though there is a great difference in available ops and hours between Asean and European teams the Dutch are convinced there´s ground for more. Passion for Pencak is feeding Holland´s hunger.
